UCLA Materials Science and Engineering
We are excited to introduce our GradSWE FY21 Undergraduate Mentoring Match Coordinator, Maggie Fox! Maggie is also a UCLA GradSWE General Board Member, Communications Coordinator, and Graduate Student Mentor. She is also a part of the SWE Women in Academia Committee.
Maggie is a UCLA Cota-Robles Fellow, and she has earned the Leaders in Sustainability Graduate Certificate. She is a Research Trainee for the UCLA NSF Innovations at the Nexus of Food, Energy and Water Systems (NFEWS).
Maggie’s research topic is Sustainable Materials and Materials for Energy Storage Systems. The overarching motivations for her research are to create sustainable alternatives for both energy storage and materials for building. One of her projects focuses on creating transparent coatings for windows to prevent buildings from using more energy due to heat loss. The other looks to optimize the materials used in energy storage devices such as batteries while still ensuring that they are an affordable energy storage solution.
Maggie’s goals are to work in academia as a research professor or as a consultant at a think tank. Eventually she hopes to start a nonprofit for underrepresented students to get access to STEM programs and other educational resources earlier.
Maggie spends a lot of time running and reading. Recently, she has taken up knitting and embroidery.
Fun fact: This past year she ran her first marathon (the LA Marathon) and she is signed up to compete in the next marathon season in both LA and NYC!
