Helene Kassouf is a new member of SWE, and she already made 3rd place at the graduate poster competition at WE19! Before joining SWE, she won many awards including the International Water Conference Travel Scholarship in November 2019, the AECOM Scholarship in August 2018, the Roy W. Likins Memorial Scholarship in August 2017, and the Richard Ian Stessel Memorial Fellowship in Environmental Engineering in both August 2018 and August 2016.
Helene’s research is on “Sustainable municipal wastewater treatment: nutrients management and energy recovery.” Excess of nutrients in surface water can lead to eutrophication and hence put aquatic life in danger. Municipal wastewater is one point source of nutrient pollution. To stay in compliance, water reclamation facilities use different processes to remove nutrients from wastewater before they discharge it into the surface water. However, the treatment processes used have proven to be inefficient and energy intensive. Helene’s research focuses on improving the efficiency of nutrient removal and on recovering energy from municipal wastewater.
Helene aims to become a professor in environmental engineering. She wants to share her acquired knowledge to raise awareness and help solve the environmental issues our world is facing.
Helene’s hobbies include working out, yoga, jogging, and reading. Fun fact: She uses songs to remember facts!
