If you’ve taken a look at the SWE Grad Leadership application, you may have noticed that among the optional supporting documents is the SWE resume. What’s a SWE resume, you may be asking. How does it differ from the traditional professional resume and when might I need one?

Much like a professional resume, a SWE resume is a document that outlines your qualifications and experience. But instead of highlighting your achievements in the pursuit of a job, a SWE resume draws attention to your SWE involvement for the purpose of strengthening your case in pursuit of a leadership position or award within SWE. These documents are often only about 2 pages and should list relevant SWE involvement.

There are two major approaches you can take when preparing a SWE resume: position based and competency based.

​Position Based
You’re probably already familiar with this framework! In this resume format, you would list your experiences and relevant details. This is a great way to show off the diversity of your efforts and because of the straightforward organization, it is easy to add new entries as you progress through the organization.

Competency Based
Maybe you have many experiences but want to tie them together into a cohesive narrative. A competency based resume model may be for you! In this format, you would focus on specific areas of competency (such as Communication/People, Research, Technical, Teaching, Financial, Organization, etc.) and highlight the positions and activities that support your competency in that area. After reading your resume, not only will people know about your SWE involvement, but they will know how your experiences have shaped your abilities in certain areas. The official SWE Leadership Competency Model prioritizes four main areas: Leadership Abilities, Communication, Business Knowledge & Management, and Self Management. There is an assortment of resources and tools at that link to help you reflect upon your proficiency in these areas.

If you are nominated for a SWE award or are applying for a SWE leadership position, you may be asked to attach a SWE resume- so go ahead and try drafting a SWE resume today so you can ask mentors or peers to take a look and offer recommendations!

Interested in joining the SWE Graduate Community Leadership Team? Now is the time to apply! Check out the application and be sure to apply by April 1st!

The SWE Graduate Community Leadership Team is looking for motivated and passionate people to serve as new coordinators and liaisons for FY21, with roles starting in July 2020. This is a great opportunity to contribute to the SWE Grad Community! Potential positions include:

1. Graduate Member Coordinator-Elect (GMC-E): Assists the Graduate Member Coordinator in fostering strong community and a network for graduate students in SWE by facilitating communication between graduate students in SWE and SWE graduate students groups, and by representing the interests of graduate students to the Society.  Note: this position has a two-year commitment.
2. Learning Content Coordinator (LCC): Hosts webinars for the graduate student community through the year. Also develops YouTube videos and other learning content.
3. Communications Coordinator (CC): Ensures that the gradswe.swe.org site and other online outlets are up-to-date; coordinates newsletters and blog posts for the Graduate Community.
4. Social Media Coordinator (SMC): Ensures current and up-to-date communication and engagement through social media and other online outlets.
5. Mentoring Coordinator (MC): Facilitates the GradSWE Mentoring Program along with the other MCs.
6. WE Local Programming Liaison (LPL): Assists in facilitating a positive experience for graduate students at WE Local conferences.
7. International Graduate Team Leader (IGTL): Creates resources for international graduates students, and aids in the efforts of GradSWE globalization.
8. Diversity and Inclusion Liaison (DIL): Promotes the support of minority groups in STEM fields. Facilitates relationships between affiliate groups and graduate student members for this effort.

The Process
Applications for the Graduate Member Coordinator-Elect are due by April 1, 2020 11:59 PM EST (midnight) and April 8, 2020 11:59 PM EST (midnight) for the remaining positions on the team.

Note that all positions require the SWE Grad application and the GMC-Elect position requires both the SWE Grad and SWE HQ applications.

First off, please reference Mujan's post below to learn about the specifics about the GPC-E (Graduate Programming Coordinator-Elect) position from December 27th. This post will give you a synopsis of what I gained from serving as GPC-E this past year.

1) I learned about what goes into building and growing the GradSWE community.

2) I gained an understanding of the inner workings of the annual conference, helped plan the annual GradSWE member meeting, and presented my own session!

3) I got to learn the ropes from the current GPC Mujan who has been a great mentor and friend.

4) Through the monthly phone calls with the GradSWE leadership team I learned a lot more about SWE's structure which I was able to bring back to my section.

5) I made friends from all over the country who have supported me both in and out of SWE :)

I've had a great time time this year as GPC-E and can't wait to work with the incoming GPC-E!
