- Create a personal website
- One way to build your network and resume at home is to create a personal website with more details and pictures of your accomplishments. In addition to a LinkedIN page, a personal website can increase your chances of having a great first impression when looking at your online presence.1 There are several commercial websites such as Wix and Squarespace that can be easier to set up. If you are looking for a more cost-effective website alternative, wordpress or some universities have services to help you build your own website on their servers.
- GradSWE has several resources to help you get started with building your website, including a YouTube video that our previous GMC, Carolyn Chlebek created.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhE036pkP7
- Get your Professional Engineering (PE) license
- If you are thinking about being an engineering consultant, developing your own engineering business or looking to separate yourself from the competition. Consider taking this time at home to study for the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam. It is the first step to getting the PE license.2
- Coding online courses
- There are several low cost coding sites online that are much cheaper than in-person or university associated class. One sites that some of my friends have used to learn python is called datacamp. If you take their introductory course, they will give you a discount on their lessons.
- Take LinkedIN skill-assessment tests
- There are several tests on LinkedIN (full list in the link below) that will add an achievement to your skills and endorsements. You can find these exams by doing to your profile and scrolling down to the Skills & Endorsements section. There is a button that says “Take skill quiz”.https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/111413/available-skill-assessments-on-linkedin?lang=en
- Register for proficiency exams
- If you are learning a language, why not get accreditation? There is a list of proficiency exams on Wikipedia.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_language_proficiency_tests
